Aunjanue Ellis, from movies such as Lifetime’s ABDUCTED:THE CAROLINA WHITE STORY in which she did a fabulous job (love that movie) and THE HELP amongst others, will be starring in the upcoming television dramatic series, THE BOOK OF NEGROES with Cuba Gooding Jr. The movie is already just about finished if not already completed, and Aunjanue will be playing the roll of Aminata Diallo, a young girl who was kidnapped in Africa and presses to gain her freedom.
According to the author, Lawrence Hill, The Book of Negroes was an actual document in history. If a black person’s name wasn’t in that book, then they couldn’t be free, or something to that effect.
Anyway, after being abducted, she lands in South Carolina which was one of the main severely racists hubs of America back in the day (and some would say still is today depending on the vantage point and region). From there, she begins her escape.
All that being stated, who wants to see this on your television screen? My hand is raised high, and I will probably get the book as well because we all know that books tend to be much better and more detailed than the flicks. Now, the reason the book has two titles is because of the general public’s view of the word Negroes depending on where it was released. This makes perfect sense. Aside from the double titles, the plot is dang near amazing!
Oh…Louis Gossett Jr. is also set to play in the series as well, so can you say GOOD? This isn’t a remake of ROOTS and not a story of a man as in 12 Years a Slave, but it’s all focused on this girl who is strong willed and determined, therefore, I’m all in for her FREEDOM.
