Mirika: Thank you for your interview with INN THE BASEMENT, Joseph Hart. I first ran across your artist splendor at the Charlotte Literary Festival and was totally engulfed by it. All of your art was gorgeous as well as uplifting without even having to utter words! Absolutely amazing! It is obvious that your artwork stands alone, with its own style. What do you consider or how do you describe your style of artwork?
Joseph Hart: Thank you. I was once reluctant to having a style or anything that would make my work distinctively recognizable because I didn't want to be put in a box. Recently, I have changed my attitude. The responses and the compliments about my work make me appreciate having my own style. Most people say that my work contains a lot of emotion or that it is very eye-catching. I really want to move people through my art. So I would have to say that my style of work is simple but moving. We don't need alot to express simple truths, ideas or feelings. Less is more.
Mirika: I would assume that art requires a natural imagination for reality and fantasy and sometimes even mixing the two. Do you also consider yourself a storyteller and please explain?
(Left)Daydreaming by Joseph J. Hart www.josephjhart.com
Joseph Hart: Art is subjective. People that view my work, usually see something that I didn't intentionally try to express. But I do attempt to create with some mystery left untold. There is what I think, and then there is what others think. No two people should see the same story, but the art will connect us all.
Mirika: Of all of your paintings, which means the most to you, and have you reserved some works of art for your own personal gallery? Also, which painting is your absolute favorite?
Joseph Hart: I don't have a favorite piece. Certain pieces represent a time or a thought in my life that once was or still is. Anything that I show the world, I am satisfied with. I don't keep my art to myself. My connection with creation(God) family and friends is the secret. My art is for the world. There is no favorite piece that I put before another. They are all significant in their own way.

Mirika: I noticed from reading your bio that in the beginning you were not too interested in studying the history of art, but solely creating. I know from my own, very small, background in art history, I found it absolutely amazing to learn and see how artists thought and worked. What changed in your mind to have you grasp the importance of education in art to place along with your God given talent?
Joseph Hart: The history of art. I'm still not too interested in a lot of art history. We focus a lot on history instead of the future of art. When people write about art history they are talking about a select few artist or art forms that made it into the mainstream. Who decides these things? Museums? committees? art dealers? Let's let the people decide what our history is. I would rather read about key moments in other artist's lives rather than what art evolved at what time. It is the life of the artist that forms the evolution and not some fantastic, elite art judges. It is important that people educate themselves on what makes them unique and then capitalize on the qualities that make them outstanding individuals. It is the basic God in all of us that makes us different.
Mirika: Wow! Very in depth as well as thought provoking. When you decided to "step out on faith", as stated in your bio, and quit your job to focus on your art, that was a faithful move. Does your faith at times intertwine with your art?
(Left) Two Roses by Joseph J. Hart www.josephjhart.com
Joseph Hart: Faith, courage, fear, need, knowledge, wisdom, understanding, freedom, power and balance. God is and always will be present in anything we do, especially the arts such as music, drama, literary and visual. So when I moved, God was moving. Leaving my job was just a part of the entire movement.
Mirika: From Columbia, SC...wow! My home! It's great to have a talent from right around the block. Do you travel to many places with your paintings and how/ where can the public purchase, discuss or book you for any events?
Joseph Hart: South Click Clak. The Met. I was actually born in Charlotte. However, I must make this very clear. We are from where the people that raised us are from. My high school days and my mentality is a Columbia mentality. We are a bit unorthodox and unusual. We are real. We are loyal to whatever we think is right at the time. All Columbians and South Carolinians are different, we are the unique group that hasn't been recognized as world class. Yes, I travel every now and then. I plan to see the world and share my piece of Columbia with it. Please don't misunderstand I am still from Earth first...then Columbia. I am not so proud that I will ignore other cultures or restrict myself to this southern portion of the United States. As for as contacting me just visit my web site, send an email or call and we(God) will work it out.
